PREP BASKETBALL / GIRLS’ PLAYOFFS : Brea-Olinda Misses Free Throws, but Makes It to Final

Brea-Olinda girls’ basketball Coach Mark Trakh is a “bottom line” guy, so he didn’t mind if the Ladycats’ 63-50 victory over Newport Harbor in the Division III-AA semifinals Tuesday night was a little ugly.

The top-seeded Ladycats made only seven of 13 free throws in the fourth quarter, finishing 12 of 22 for the game, when they could have easily put the game at Sonora High out of reach.

Brea-Olinda (27-2), which will face the El Dorado-Morningside winner Saturday at the Bren Center, was forced out of its normal man-to-man defense, and played a 2-3 matchup zone.

Newport Harbor (17-9) played without its head coach, Shannon Jakosky, who according to the school’s Athletic Director Eric Tweit, was suspended indefinitely for violating a Southern Section rule for holding a team session to watch game films on Sunday.

Thousand Oaks 69, Huntington Beach Marina 28--Marion Jones, in only her second game back after sustaining a broken wrist, scored 15 points, pulled down 16 rebounds, blocked six shots and made four steals as the defending champion and top-seeded Lancers (27-1) powered their way into the Division I-A final.

Thousand Oaks guard Michelle Palmisano also had a big game as she outscored the entire Marina team, 30-28. Palmisano scored 19 points in the second half.

The Lancers forced Marina (24-5) into 21 turnovers.

Holy Martyrs 43, Webb 33--Sophomore Aline Altibarmakian scored a game-high 14 points to lead host Holy Martyrs to its first Division V-AA championship game.

Alemany 73, Rubidoux 61--Freshman Samantha Rigley scored 23 points and teammates Rachel Corelli and Kelly McKay each scored 15 to lead Alemany to a Division II-A semifinal victory at Rubidoux.

CITY SECTION

Washington 76, Dorsey 35--Washington’s Charisse Sampson scored 24 points and grabbed 25 rebounds to lead the Generals in a City 4-A Division semifinal at Gardena High.

Washington (27-2), which has won three consecutive 4-A titles, never trailed in defeating Dorsey for the third time this season.

Banning 60, Crenshaw 41--Michelle Campbell scored 25 points to advance the Pilots to the 4-A championship game at the Sports Arena Friday night against Washington.

Roosevelt 53, Jefferson 51--Denise Caudillo scored 23 points and the Roughriders held off a late Jefferson charge in the 3-A Division semifinal game at Manual Arts High.

Caudillo, a 5-7 sophomore, was the only player for Roosevelt to score in double figures.

The defending champion Roughriders will make their third appearance in four years at the Sports Arena.

Roosevelt improves to 18-5, and Jefferson ended the season with a 20-7 record.
