SOUTHERN SECTION SOCCER ROUNDUP : Mater Dei Beats El Toro for 4-A Girls’ Title
CERRITOS — Mater Dei beat El Toro, 1-0, for the CIF Southern Section Division 4-A girls’ soccer title Friday at Gahr High.
The Monarchs (25-2-2) foiled El Toro’s bid to win a third consecutive 4-A title, ended the Chargers’ 19-match unbeaten string and became the first non-South Coast League team in seven seasons to win the championship.
El Toro finished 24-3-2.
Four minutes into the second half, junior forward Katie Ward got loose behind the El Toro defense and put a sliding shot into the left corner of the net. It was Ward’s 23 goal of the season.
BOYS’ SMALL SCHOOLS DIVISION
Claremont Webb 3, Riverside Norte Vista 1--Duke Kwon scored two goals during the first half for Webb (18-1-0). Norte Vista finished 22-7-1.
