OXNARD : Substance Examined at Packing Plant
Wearing protective suits, hazardous materials inspectors on Monday investigated an unknown substance leaking into a drainage ditch from a fire-damaged mushroom packing plant near Oxnard.
Inspectors took air and water samples near King Packing at the end of Arnold Road, but were unable to identify the substance or whether it was hazardous, said Ventura County Fire Department dispatcher Alison Schember.
The investigation and cleanup have been turned over to the Ventura County Environmental Health Department, Schember said.
The packinghouse, which burned to the ground during an all-night fire last month, had previously housed drums filled with fuel and other chemicals, fire officials said last month.
Schember said there was no indication that the fuel or chemicals were leaking into the drainage ditch Monday.
