Defenseman Ken Baumgartner was traded by the New York Islanders to the Toronto Maple Leafs with forward Dave McIlwain for center Claude Loiselle and right wing Daniel Marois.
Baumgartner had only one assist in 44 games, but logged 202 penalty minutes as the team’s enforcer.
Other deals before the trading deadline included:
--The Montreal Canadiens sent defenseman Petr Svoboda to the Buffalo Sabres for Kevin Haller.
--The Edmonton Oilers obtained goaltender Ron Tugnutt and junior left winger Brad Zavisha from the Quebec Nordiques for minor league left winger Martin Rucinsky.
--The San Jose Sharks traded defenseman Bob McGill and an eighth-round draft pick to the Detroit Red Wings for left wing Johan Garpenlov.
--Goalie Frank Pietrangelo, who has played little this season after helping Pittsburgh to the Stanley Cup last season, was traded to Hartford for a 1993 draft pick.
