COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Valley Allows 15 Walks in 13-9 Loss to Ventura
Ventura College was held to just five hits, but six Valley pitchers combined to give up 15 walks and the Pirates took advantage to score a 13-9 Western State Conference win at Ventura.
Ventura (11-3, 5-0 in WSC play), aided by six walks, scored seven runs in the first inning. Kasha Clemons’ two-run triple was the big blow, giving the Pirates a 7-2 lead that they did not relinquish.
Ventura, however, had to call on five pitchers to hold the lead.
Moorpark 8, Glendale 4--Del Marine’s three-run home run capped a six-run second inning for visiting Moorpark in a WSC game.
Donny Hill pitched 4 1/3 innings to earn the win for Moorpark (9-6).
Mission 6, Long Beach 2 (10 innings)--Roy Lozano’s double knocked in the go-ahead run for Mission (4-9-1) in the 10th inning of a nonconference game.
Gabe Chavez went three for five with three runs batted in and Dereck Ornelas and Marlon McKinney each had two hits for the Free Spirit.
Canyons 8, Cuesta 3--Mike Kerber went three for four to lead Canyons (6-10, 3-2) in a WSC game.
R. J. Simone (2-1) allowed six hits, struck out five and walked two in 6 2/3 innings to earn the victory.
Kirk Fellows added two hits for Canyons.
Santa Monica 5, Oxnard 3--Oxnard stranded the tying runs at first and second in the ninth inning of the WSC game at Oxnard.
Oxnard’s Adrian Estrada was two for three with two RBIs.
Oxnard pitchers Dean McElroy (0-3), Jamie Valez and Steve Thorpe combined to walk seven and hit two batters, and Santa Monica scored four unearned runs.
