OUTLOOK
Last season was frustrating for Roadrunners, who remembered the team’s appearance in the Southern Section Division 3-A semifinals in 1990. Saddleback still managed third place, but the loss in the first round of the playoffs was expected because the team didn’t have much talent to go with pitcher Desi Abrego and catcher Kim Carstens. Carstens is now starting at La Verne, but Abrego is back for one more season. Alonzo believes this team will be stronger that the last because of a solid group of freshmen. Abrego’s younger sister Marlene will replace Carstens, and two talented freshmen--Held and Chavarria--will bolster the right side of the infield, which is necessary because most hitters cannot pull Abrego’s fastballs. Abrego had a 0.45 earned-run average last season with three perfect games and 211 strikeouts, despite missing five games with a foot injury that has since mended. She also batted .338 and hit five home runs.
