OUTLOOK
The Sailors again lack the experience of the top teams in the league, but because they are a strong hitting team they might surprise some teams. Last season, for instance, Newport Harbor took University to eight innings before losing, 6-5. The Sailors batted .280 as a team, led by Colclasure, who batted .400 and drove in 15 runs as a freshman. She was also the team’s pitcher and had a no-hitter to go with her 1.83 earned-run average. Although she’s not overpowering, Serven said, she is improving rapidly. “She’s a good high school pitcher, but she’s not in the class of the best in our league yet,” Serven said. Three of the Sailors’ best hitters--including Ali Barry, now starting at Saddleback College--graduated, but DeMayo (.317) and Bernhard (.255) should pick up the slack. Bernhard, one of only three seniors on the team, was also an all-league soccer goalkeeper for the Sailors. It will be hard for the Sailors to break into the top three, but that doesn’t concern Serven too much. “They do a good job, and they work hard,” Serven said. “It’s just a matter of improving and getting better so when it comes to league we can be competitive.”
