Court Upholds Term Limits
Assembly Speaker Willie Brown stated that “poll taxes were designed to limit choice. Term limits were designed to limit the choices at the polls. One wore a sheet and one didn’t” (March 10). His statement is ludicrous. Poll taxes prevented the poor black population, who were still facing severe discrimination in the South, from exercising their right to vote.
The difference is that the majority of voters in California, including African-Americans, voted for Prop. 140. All legal state residents have the right to vote as they see fit without paying a “tax” to cast their ballots.
It is out with the old and in with the new. Time for some fresh blood, Willie.
