PAGES : PEN Center West Honors Writers
PEN Center USA West, a branch of the writers’ organization International PEN, has announced the winners of its 1992 Literary Awards.
The winners: in fiction, Sandra Cisneros for “Women Hollering Creek and Other Stories” (Random House); nonfiction, Curt Gentry, “J. Edgar Hoover, The Man and the Secrets (W. W. Norton); poetry, Czeslaw Milosz, “Provinces” (Ecco Press); children’s literature, Allen Say, “Tree of Cranes” (Houghton Mifflin).
The winner for translation is Robert Griffin for “Gustave Flaubert, Early Writings” (University of Nebraska Press). In screenwriting, Callie Khouri was honored for the script of “Thelma & Louise” (Metro Goldwyn Mayer).
The journalism winners were Joe Holley for “Voices in the Dark” (Texas Monthly) and Michael Ventura, “Letters to the War” (L.A. Weekly). In drama, Robert Schenkkan won for “The Kentucky Cycle” (Intiman Theatre Company of Seattle/Mark Taper Forum).
Each winner receives a $500 cash prize and will be honored at an awards ceremony and banquet in Los Angeles on April 3.
