New Assistant Police Chief Named

Jerry Sanders, 41, a 19-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department, was promoted to assistant chief of police Friday. He had been the acting assistant chief in charge of support services.

Sanders will be one of seven assistant chiefs under a new alignment of executives adopted by Police Chief Bob Burgreen. His duties include supervising internal affairs, inspection control and the department’s new office of professional standards, which examines allegations of improper police conduct.

Promoted to commander in February 1990, Sanders oversaw field operations for 18 months before taking over as acting chief for the past six months. While a lieutenant, he was the commanding officer of the SWAT unit that ended the siege at the San Ysidro McDonald’s in 1984, when James Huberty shot and killed 21 people.

Although all seven assistant chief slots are now filled, Mike Rice is out on disability leave and not expected to return to the department. Assistant Chief Cal Krosch is retiring in July. More than 100 people, including some from within the department, have applied to fill the two jobs.
