Tom Kahn; International Affairs Chief for AFL-CIO
Tom Kahn, 53, international affairs director for the AFL-CIO who worked with such world leaders as Lech Walesa and Nelson Mandela on the human rights front. He was a key figure when money and printing equipment were smuggled into Poland after Walesa’s Solidarity movement was suppressed by the Polish leadership in 1981. He also assisted in bringing U.S. aid to striking miners in the Soviet Union and was a onetime associate of civil rights leader Bayard Rustin, coordinator of the 1963 civil rights march on Washington.
