Because of an ankle sprain last fall during volleyball season, Dean is only now getting into competitive shape. On Thursday, Dean, the three-time South Coast League champion in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, won the races in 13.0 and 26.9 seconds, respectively, in the Diablos’ 92-35 dual-meet victory over Irvine. Saturday, she anchored Mission Viejo’s winning 1,600- and 400-meter relay teams at the Tustin Relays and helped her team to second in the 800 relay. “I’m sure there are other kids that have her ability, but I think the source of her success is her work ethic,” Mission Viejo Coach Fred Almond said. Despite not entering the jumping events, Mission Viejo tied Orange Lutheran for second in the team competition, 2 1/2 points behind Claremont.

Other top performers:

Monica Jimenez, who pitched 19 innings in three Cypress victories and hasn’t allowed an earned run in 48 innings this season.

Kristy Kierulff, who jumped 5-8 1/2 in the high jump, and won the long and triple jumps in Esperanza’s 74 1/2-52 1/2 victory over Katella.

Terri Kobata, who pitched a two-hitter and had 11 strikeouts in Mater Dei’s 5-0 victory over Loara.

Heidi Schmidt, who pitched a no-hitter and struck out 11 in Troy’s 7-1 victory over Valencia.
