PREP ROUNDUP : Surface’s Two-Hitter Gets Pacifica Past La Quinta in Softball
Jennifer Surface pitched a two-hitter, leading Pacifica to a 2-0 victory over La Quinta in a Garden Grove League softball game Tuesday at Pacifica.
Surface (5-1) has allowed only one run in 42 innings this season. Amber Barazsu drove in Kristen Varagne for the first run in a two-run fifth inning for the Vikings (6-1, 2-1 in league). La Quinta is 5-3-1, 1-1-1.
In other Garden Grove League softball:
Kennedy 6, Rancho Alamitos 0--Nicole Paloney and Lisa Pitt each had two hits and two runs batted in for visiting Kennedy (6-3, 2-1). Pitt also threw a two-hitter and struck out eight.
Garden Grove 1, Santiago 0--Duffy White pitched a one-hitter with five strikeouts, allowing only a third-inning single. Briana Corona’s single drove in Jennifer Johnson with the only run for host Garden Grove (4-1-1, 1-1-1).
In Academy League softball:
Liberty Christian 9, St. Margaret’s 2--Jen Caruso and Melissa Tedisco each had two RBIs for Liberty Christian (3-2, 1-0). Colette McLaughlin drove in both runs for St. Margaret’s (4-1, 0-1).
In Sunset League softball:
Fountain Valley 8, Santa Ana 2--Michelle Kravik was two for three with a triple and two RBIs for Fountain Valley (8-2, 2-0).
Marina 6, Edison 0--Marcy Crouch (3-1) pitched a complete game for Marina (4-4, 1-1).
In Olympic League softball:
Whittier Christian 3, Cerritos Valley Christian 2 (8 innings)--Shelly Thums tripled, stole second and third, then scored on the catcher’s error to give Whittier Christian (7-1, 3-0) the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth.
Brethren Christian 8, Ontario Christian 2--Michelle Rueter had two RBIs and pitched a three-hitter, including seven strikeouts, for Brethren Christian (6-1, 2-1).
In Sunset League softball:
Huntington Beach 2, Westminster 1--Stephanie Noffsinger pitched a one-hitter with eight strikeouts and only allowed an unearned run in the first inning for the Oilers (1-6-1, 1-1).
Brea-Olinda 1, Foothill 0--Samantha Cardenas scored from first on a dropped fly ball in the sixth for visiting Brea-Olinda (5-2).
Villa Park 1, Santa Margarita 0 (8 innings)--Brandee McArthur pitched a no-hitter and struck out 11. Christian Culver drove in Kristen Maida on a single for the winning run in the bottom of the eighth for Villa Park (8-3).
Loara 3, Laguna Hills 2--In the top of the seventh, Loara (4-2) loaded the bases on three consecutive walks before Melissa Egger drove in the winning run on a fielder’s choice.
In Orange League golf:
Western 192, Savanna 212--Tiger Woods shot a one-under-par 34 for Western (3-4, 1-1) at Dad Miller in Anaheim.
In South Coast League golf:
Irvine 205, Dana Hills 211--Brannon Rees shot one-over par for Irvine (9-3, 3-1) at El Niguel.
El Toro 186, Capistrano Valley 215--Joe Garner shot a three-under 33 at El Toro Marine Base for host El Toro (10-0, 3-0).
In South Coast League boys’ volleyball:
San Clemente 3, Dana Hills 1--Dru Gerhard had 18 kills and 11 digs and Morgan Bannister had 16 kills for host San Clemente (3-2, 1-0), which won, 15-10, 16-18, 15-1, 15-11.
Capistrano Valley 3, Mission Viejo 1--Eric Seiffert had 15 kills and nine blocks for Capistrano Valley.
