BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Dana Hills Stops Fullerton in Anaheim Lions Final

Seth Etherton, Dana Hills’ sophomore right-hander, pitched six innings and reliever Brad Schafer stopped a Fullerton rally in the bottom of the seventh to preserve a 4-1 victory in the championship game of the Anaheim Lions Easter baseball tournament Wednesday night at Glover Stadium in Anaheim.

Etherton (3-1) had a shutout through six innings, yielding four hits while striking out six and walking two. But he walked the bases loaded with one out in the seventh.

Schafer came in and got Jim White on a called third strike for the second out. Fullerton pinch-runner Garrett Underwood scored the Indians’ only run when first baseman Chad Smith mishandled Dave Chacon’s ground ball. Schafer then struck out Dan Chacon.

“(Etherton’s) pitches weren’t too far off (in the seventh inning), but he was tired,” Dana Hills Coach Bob Canary said. “He has a good sneaky fastball and very good changeups, which are very effective.”

Dana Hills (12-5-1) received most of its offensive punch from catcher Scott Maynard and designated hitter Dan Anderson.

Maynard went two for three, including a run-scoring single in the first inning that staked Etherton to a 1-0 lead. Anderson went two for four, including RBI singles in the fifth and seventh innings. Anderson drove Maynard home in the fifth, and Dana Hills’ Ryan Vandermark scored from third on a double steal for a 3-0 Dana Hills lead.
