Fund Raiser: Marshall High School of Falls Church, Va., had a unique way of raising funds to help its baseball team pay for its $17,000 trip to compete in the Upper Deck tournament this week.
“We delivered all the phone books in two different area codes,” said Marshall Coach Dean Sissler. “We put fliers with each phone book telling the community that we were raising money for the trip and got another $600 in donations.”
Upper Deck also played a role in helping the Marshall party of 60 make the trip. Marshall bought five cartons of baseball cards wholesale and sold them to local card shops.
Sissler said the team planned to see the sights of Southern California, including a trip to Disneyland and the Dodger-Brave game Saturday night. The spot Marshall visited was Newport Beach.
“The boys wanted to see those California girls,” Sissler said.
