El Monte : Council to Appoint Member
The City Council will appoint a new council member after a special meeting next week, and it may wait 30 days to respond to allegations that the city clerk does not live within the city limits.
The council decided Tuesday to delay the appointment after receiving 13 applications for the seat vacated by Patricia Wallach, who was elected mayor April 14.
Applications will be accepted through today and candidates will be interviewed at a special 6:30 p.m. meeting Tuesday, after which a choice will be made.
Meanwhile, in response to allegations that Clerk Kathleen Kaplan lives in Moreno Valley where she owns a home, City Atty. David Gondek said in a written report that he lacks sufficient proof to disqualify Kaplan but that further inquiry is warranted. He advised the council to allow Kaplan 30 days to respond.
The panel made no decision on the matter.
