LBCC Volleyball Team in State Semifinal Match
Top-ranked Long Beach City College meets De Anza College of Cupertino at 7:30 p.m. Friday in a semifinal match at the state community college men’s volleyball championships at Palomar College in San Marcos.
In the other semifinal at 5 p.m., Orange Coast College of Costa Mesa plays Pierce College of Woodland Hills. The losers play for third place at 5 p.m. Saturday. The championship match is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Long Beach (20-1) is led by sophomore setter David Han, who was the South Coast Conference most valuable player in 1991, and Icaro DeSouza, an outside hitter who was an all-conference middle blocker last year. All-conference selections for 1992 will be announced after the state tournament.
Other key players for the Vikings include sophomore outside hitter David Alofaituli, freshman right side hitter Ala Mikaele, sophomore middle blockers Brad Schmidt, Don Sasa and Matt Taylor, and sophomore defensive specialist Robert Orantes.
The team is coached by Ken Gregory and assistant Art Garcia.
