A summary of significant Los Angeles City Hall decisions affecting the Westside in the past week.
CITY COUNCIL
LAX PLAN: Approved a proposal by Councilwoman Ruth Galanter that would require the Department of Airports to reimburse the city earlier for street maintenance and other services provided at Los Angeles International Airport. Galanter said the plan could generated $10 million at the beginning of next fiscal year. The Department of Airport’s board of commissioners must approve the plan.
PARKING LOT IMPROVEMENTS: Approved a plan to rebuild two city parking lots in Hollywood for about $775,000. The money will come from the city’s parking meters revenue funds. One lot is on Vine Street next to the Doolittle Theater and the other is on North Hudson Avenue next to the Hollywood YMCA.
RECREATION AND PARKS COMMISSION
JUST SAY NO: Approved a motion accepting a $15,000 donation from the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. for the Just Say No city anti-drug program. The money will be used in part to buy T-shirts and provide transportation to various events for an estimated 2,000 children from 6 to 15 who participate in the program.
BRAUDE HONORED: Approved naming the Venice Beach bikeway Marvin Braude Bikeway in honor of the councilman who was instrumental in establishing the beach bikeway system.
HOW THEY VOTED
How Westside representatives voted on selected issues.
DRUGS AND GANGS: Approved a proposal supporting pending state legislation that would restrict police use of Community Redevelopment Agency money. The money could only be used by police to fight drug trafficking and gang violence in the project area where it was generated. Passed: 13-0. Voting yes: Marvin Braude, John Ferraro, Ruth Galanter, Nate Holden, Joel Wachs and Michael Woo. Zev Yaroslavsky was absent.
DRUGS AND GANGS II: Failed to approve a proposal that asked the Legislature to allow Community Redevelopment Agency money to be used throughout the city by police to combat drug trafficking and gang violence regardless of the area in which it is raised. Failed: 7-6. Voting yes: Braude, Ferraro, Holden and Wachs. Voting No: Galanter and Woo. Yaroslavsky was absent.
NEA GRANT: Approved an application requesting a $35,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts that will be used to help establish an arts exchange program between Los Angeles and Tijuana. Passed: 11-0. Voting yes: Braude, Ferraro, Galanter, Holden and Woo. Wachs and Yaroslavsky were absent.
WELFARE: Opposed the state budget proposal of a 10% reduction in welfare benefits to families with dependent children. Passed: 9 to 2. Voting yes: Braude, Ferraro, Galanter, Holden and Woo. Wachs and Yaroslavsky were absent.
