Vanguard Loses ‘Me-Too’ Bid on 99-Seat Plan
Actors’ Equity has turned down a bid by the Vanguard Theatre Ensemble to join with three Orange County theaters in their proposal that the union extend its 99-Seat Plan to their venues.
If approved, the three amateur theater companies would be allowed to hire union-professional performers at token wages during a one-year trial period. A decision is expected Friday on the joint proposal made several months ago by the Alternative Repertory Theatre and the Way Off Broadway Playhouse, both in Santa Ana, and the Backstage Theatre in Costa Mesa.
Kevin Aratari, executive producer of the Vanguard in Fullerton, said Tuesday he sent the union a written “me-too” proposal last week but was informed it would not be considered by the union’s board. “I was told I could apply again next year, after the trial period,” Aratari said, “that is, if they take positive action on the first proposal.”
