Cal Poly Pomona Wins Tennis Title

The Cal Poly Pomona women’s tennis team won its second consecutive NCAA Division II championship by shutting out Grand Canyon University, 5-0, last weekend at Amarillo, Tex.

The Broncos, led by 1990 singles champion Julie Slattery, defeated Cal State Los Angeles, 8-1, in the quarterfinals and Northern Colorado, 5-1, in the semifinals.

Pomona has won four national tennis championships.

Slattery, Rebecca Huereque and Diane Ewing are competing in singles competition this week.

Comeback kids: The Mt. San Antonio College baseball team earned a berth in the Southern California Regional of the community college playoffs by overcoming a nine-run deficit in their regular-season finale against Long Beach.

Mt. SAC trailed, 9-0, in the eighth inning before scoring five runs in the eighth and five in the ninth. Scott Tomko’s bases-loaded triple was the game-winning hit.

Mt. SAC finished South Coast Conference play in a second-place tie with Long Beach at 14-10, but earned the conference’s automatic berth in the playoffs because of its 4-2 record against conference champion Cerritos.

All-star coaches: Dick Sheehan of Covina High and Tim Campa of El Monte have been selected to coach the East and West teams at this year’s Hall of Fame All-Star Football game July 17 at Citrus College.

Sheehan led Covina to the Southern Section Division IV quarterfinals last season. Campa guided El Monte to a 7-4 record and the school’s first playoff berth since 1987.

The game, under the direction of Muir Coach Jim Brownfield, is sponsored by the Pasadena-San Gabriel Valley Chapter of the National Football Foundation.

Signed, sealed, delivered: The Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball team received letters of intent from four players.

Jason Powell a 6-1 sophomore guard, attended San Diego State in 1990-91, but did not play last season.

Tim Cage, a 6-0 junior guard, is transferring from Kings River College in Sacramento, where he averaged 17 points and five assists last season.

Curtis Bell, a 6-7 junior forward, averaged 18.5 points and 8.2 rebounds a game for Santa Rosa College last season.

Charles Benn, a 6-6 sophomore from Milwaukee, was recently discharged from the Marines. He scored 26 points against Pomona last season while playing for a team from Camp Pendleton.

Golf and tennis outing: The 11th annual Apache Invitational Golf and Tennis Classic will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Santa Anita Golf Course, 405 S. Santa Anita Ave., in Arcadia.

Price for golf and dinner is $125 or tennis (women only) and dinner is $85. Dinner only is $75.

Prizes include a submarine ride from Los Angeles to San Diego and a trip on an aircraft carrier.

More signings: The Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball program signed two players.

Jennifer Harney, a 5-10 junior, was an all-state forward for Golden West College last season. She averaged 19.5 points and 8.5 rebounds a game.

Paula Holden, 6-1, played at Imperial Valley College last season.
