TENNIS ROUNDUP : Capriati Has Her Troubles, Loses in Rome
Third-seeded Jennifer Capriati courted disaster once too often and lost to Amanda Coetzer of South Africa, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, Thursday in the third round of the Italian Open at Rome.
“I just played bad,” Capriati said. “She was keeping the ball in the court and I was making the errors.”
The turning point came in the eighth game of the third set when Capriati, with a chance to take a 5-3 lead and serve for the match, failed to convert two break points.
Monica Seles, the world’s top ranked women’s player, needed only 52 minutes to beat Carrie Cunningham, 6-0, 6-1. No. 4-seeded Mary Joe Fernandez also advanced to the quarterfinals, beating Ines Gorrochategui of Argentina, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Top-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden defeated Francisco Clavet of Spain, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the quarterfinals of the German Open at Hamburg.
Edberg, the world’s second-ranked player behind Jim Courier, next will play unseeded Omar Camporese of Italy, who defeated Stefano Pescosolido, also of Italy, 6-4, 6-4.
All other third-round matches were suspended or postponed because of rain.
