CCC for Minorities
In his commentary on the Los Angeles riot (May 6), William Julius Williams points to the need for “race-neutral” programs to assist young black men in breaking through economic and employment barriers. The California Conservation Corps strongly concurs.
The CCC is a state agency that hires a cross-section of California youth to work in the Los Angeles area and throughout the state. We believe that young people of all socioeconomic backgrounds working together, and achieving together, will foster solid on-the-job relationships that can serve as building blocks for the rest of their working lives, and benefit the communities they live in. In fact, we tell corps applicants “if you don’t like people of different colors, if you don’t like the disabled, then you don’t want to be in the CCC.”
While the corps is a small effort in the overall picture, we like to think the jobs and the experiences we offer can have some impact.
