Judge Sentences Rapist, Already Serving 30-Year Term, to 24 Years
A Michigan man was sentenced Monday to serve 24 years in state prison--the second substantial sentence for rape the man has received in the past five months.
Sam Consiglio Jr., 41, was convicted in April in San Diego Superior Court of six felony counts of rape, sodomy and oral copulation. A jury convicted him of posing as a police officer last summer and forcing a prostitute to perform sex acts under the threat of arrest.
“That’s Mr. Consiglio’s M.O.,” San Diego Deputy Dist. Atty. Michael Przytulski said. “He threatens and intimidates people.”
He was found guilty and sentenced to 30 years in prison last December for raping a homeless woman whom he recruited at a downtown shelter, supposedly to do bookkeeping work at a nonexistent property-management firm.
According to testimony at Consiglio’s second trial, he told the prostitute he was involved with the Mafia and could have had her murdered.
“Mr. Consiglio is basically evil when it comes to his relationship with women,” Przytulski said.
In a short statement to Superior Court Judge John Thompson, Consiglio, who represented himself at this first trial, proclaimed his innocence. “I have not committed a crime in San Diego,” Consiglio said.
Thompson handed down the maximum sentence and said Consiglio took advantage of the prostitute, who was brain-damaged because of a previous attack.
“It’s very clear . . . Mr. Consiglio’s reign of terror must end, and hopefully it will end today,” the judge said.
