PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : La Jolla Boys Make Finals
La Jolla High advanced to its 22nd boys’ tennis final in 23 years Thursday after routing The Bishop’s School, 17-1, in the semifinals of the San Diego Section 2-A team tournament.
La Jolla, the top-seeded 2-A team and five-time defending champion, has won 24 titles since the San Diego Section was formed in 1960-61.
Against fourth-seeded Bishop’s, which finished 15-3, La Jolla (18-0) swept the singles.
The Vikings’ James Conda, Jonathan Elsberry and Simon Kurth each won three singles sets with the closest set being 6-4.
La Jolla will meet second-seeded San Pasqual, an 11-7 winner over No. 3 Valhalla (19-2) in today’s final at 3 p.m. at Rancho Arbolitos. San Pasqual is 21-3.
In the 3-A, top-seeded Torrey Pines (19-2) will meet No. 2 Patrick Henry (14-0) in today’s final at 12:30 p.m. at Rancho Arbolitos.
Torrey Pines advanced with Thursday’s 15-3 victory over No. 4 San Dieguito (15-5). Patrick Henry edged Poway, 10-8, in the other semifinal.
Torrey Pines, the defending champion, has won three titles. Patrick Henry, going for its first title, hasn’t been in the finals since 1972.
BADMINTON
Top-seeded Somsack Monsavath of San Diego High advanced to today’s finals of boys’ singles play with a 5-0, 15-3 victory over Thao M. Nguyen of Crawford. Thao V. Nguyen, Thao M.’s brother, beat C.V. Quan of San Diego, 15-13, 10-15, 15-7, in the other semifinal.
