Soul II Soul’s Eclecticism Takes Caribbean Turn
*** Soul II Soul, “Just Right,” Virgin. Despite the surprise element of smooth male vocals and house atmospherics, the third album from the Afrocentric British confederacy of musicians, singers, rappers, dancers and style-makers probably won’t match the impact of Soul II Soul’s debut, which single-handedly slowed down the pace on international dance floors and set the current trend of visionary eclecticism. Roots entrepreneur Jazzie B, however, does hold to his winning formula here, with a heavier leaning than usual toward his Caribbean ancestry.
New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good) and four stars (excellent).
