Countywide : Council Approves Rezoning Plans on 3 County Parcels
Camarillo City Council members have voted to support three proposals to change the zoning on county land near the city, and to oppose a fourth proposal to build 50 homes in Santa Rosa Valley.
The council’s unanimous vote last week on the proposals was advisory, and the Ventura County Board of Supervisors will make the final decision on whether to amend the county’s General Plan and grant the zoning changes.
The four projects are all outside Camarillo city limits but close enough to the city’s boundaries to affect future planning decisions, city officials said.
Council members voted in favor of a plan to rezone five acres in southwest Somis, owned by the Faith Baptist Church, from agricultural to residential uses.
Council members backed a plan to change zoning for 479 acres near Vineyard Avenue at Los Angeles Avenue, owned by Calmat Co., from agricultural to open space.
Calmat wants to establish a soil mining operation there, Camarillo Planning Director Matthew A. Boden said.
The council also supported a Calmat proposal to dig deeper pits than are allowed under current regulations for a mining operation on land in the Oxnard Forebay area.
Calmat wants to create ground-water recharge and storage basins for use by the United Water Conservation District, Boden said.
Council members followed the city planners’ recommendation in opposing a proposal by resident Carolyn Nicholson to build 50 homes south of Santa Rosa Road near the Glenside Lane intersection because of the project’s proximity to adjoining properties.
