La Verne : 6 City Workers Face Layoffs

In the face of a projected deficit for the 1992-93 fiscal year, City Manager Martin R. Lomeli has notified six full-time city employees that they will be laid off at the end of June if the city budget he proposed Monday night is adopted.

To be laid off are four people in administrative positions at City Hall, a clerk at the Fire Department and a civilian jailer at the Police Department.

Lomeli said the day he told good employees that they will lose their jobs was “the bleakest, most difficult day in my career.”

The cuts will save the city $150,000, Lomeli said, but with a $27.4-million budget, La Verne will still run a $100,000 deficit, reducing the city’s reserve fund to $1.2 million.

Lomeli blamed the deficit and layoffs on the poor economy and reductions in revenue from state government.
