POLITICAL NOTEBOOK : Perot Backers Get Council OK to Use Parks
Getting It in Writing: The Covina City Council gave supporters of presumed presidential candidate Ross Perot permission to use two city parks to gather signatures to place Perot on the November ballot.
Thomas M. Forrest, Covina coordinator for the Perot Petition Committee, appealed to the council after city officials denied his request to use the parks because of a policy prohibiting the use of city facilities for political activity. Forrest told the council last week that the group had a constitutional right to circulate the petitions and register people to vote.
On recommendation from City Atty. Charles S. Vose, the council voted 4 to 0 to exempt the Perot volunteers on condition that the activities are held 50 feet away from city buildings. Councilman Chris Lancaster was absent.
Forrest has to meet with the Department of Parks and Recreation to schedule times and locations so volunteers won’t interfere with regular park activities. The committee plans to set up tables in Covina and Kelby parks until July 31.
School bond backers: The Arcadia Korean Parents Assn. has raised $3,000 to help campaign for the passage of school bonds that would pay for school repairs in the Arcadia Unified School District.
The money was raised at a Korean barbecue and picnic lunch attended by about 300 people May 30 at Live Oak Park in Temple City.
