What’s the real world like after you leave “Wayne’s World”--especially if you’re Wayne? That’s a question Hollywood’s been asking about the future of comedian Mike Myers. After all, the success of “Wayne’s World,’ which has already grossed more than $110 million, obviously put Myers--just like Eddie Murphy after “Beverly Hills Cop” in 1984--in a position to call his own shots.

But when it was announced that Myers had agreed to star in TriStar Pictures’ “So I Married an Axe Murderer,” a black comedy that’s been in development at various studios for over four years, as his follow-up film, the question on a lot of people’s minds was--why this project?

“So I Married an Axe Murderer,” originally written by Robbie Fox and subsequently rewritten by Myers, Barbara Benedek and Neal Mullarkey (Carrie Fisher is reportedly also doing some work on the script), is the story of a bachelor’s assumption that his girlfriend--the character has not been cast yet--is a murderer.

According to an insider close to the negotiations, Myers’ decision was based mostly on the script. “He was (shown) a number of scripts and this was the one he liked the most and thought he was the most right for,” says the source. “It was simply a question of him finding a script that he thought was funny and was right for his sensibilities.”

Cary Woods, one of the producers of “Axe Murderer,” said “Although I don’t know what else was submitted to him, I do know that he thought the film had a hilarious premise and its execution was hilarious,”

According to Woods, he and his partners had been interested in Myers even before “Wayne’s World” was released. “We had already had a dialogue going with his people when this project became available,” he says.

It was also recently rumored that Sharon Stone was interested in the part of the girlfriend, but that didn’t pan out. Academy Award winner Brenda Fricker (“My Left Foot”) has already been announced for the cast, and Alan Arkin and Myers’ fellow “Saturday Night Live” cast member Phil Hartman will also appear, Woods said. Filming begins in San Francisco June 29.

As for how much Myers will be getting paid for his latest role, everybody involved is tight-lipped, although the agency source says, “To say his price has gone up considerably would be the understatement of the century.”

Meanwhile, negotiations for Myers’ appearance in the “Wayne’s World” sequel are “95% complete and will be finished soon,” a source says, paving the way for the next “Wayne’s World” to begin filming next April.
