Couple Held in Shooting of Deputy : Capture: A special sheriff’s team arrests suspects sought in the wounding of a deputy during a routine traffic stop.

A couple being sought in the shooting of a sheriff’s deputy during a routine traffic stop were arrested Sunday morning in Lakeside, officials said.

James Michael Bright, 26, was arrested about 6 a.m. on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the June 6 shooting, said Sgt. Glenn Revell, a spokesman for the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities said Bright, also known as James Michael Roberts, was being cited for a broken tail light when he pulled his car to the roadside and allegedly opened fire on Deputy Paul E. Kain.

Kain, who was struck at least twice in the lower body, is recovering at UC San Diego Medical Center. Bright was being held at County Jail downtown without bail, Revell said.

Heather Anne McVey, 26, was also arrested Sunday after being questioned by detectives, said Lt. Ron VanRaaphorst, a sheriff’s spokesman. McVey was in the Lakeside home with Bright on Sunday, and was allegedly a passenger in the car during the shooting, VanRaaphorst said. McVey was booked on suspicion of being an accessory to attempted murder. She was being held at the Las Colinas Jail in Santee in lieu of $3,000 bail, VanRaaphorst said.

Bright and McVey were apparently asleep as the investigation team surrounded the house, the lieutenant said, adding that Bright emerged first and surrendered peacefully.

The couple had been sought for more than a week by a special team of more than two dozen sheriff’s investigators, Sheriff Jim Roache said at a news conference Sunday.

Sheriff’s officials said information from residents near the shooting site in the 8500 block of Palm Avenue in Lemon Grove led to identifying Bright as a suspect. Investigators also were aided by neighbors in the 13300 block of Julian Avenue, where the arrest took place, VanRaaphorst said.

“A caller let detectives know that a car matching one they had been on the lookout for had just pulled up to the residence,” VanRaaphorst said.

Revell said detectives found evidence in another car--a stolen 1985 Camaro believed to have been driven by the gunman--linking Bright to the shooting. The car was found abandoned several hours after the shooting.

Sheriff’s officials declined to give further details on how Bright was identified as a suspect.
