U.S. Policy in Yugoslavia

Carol Williams’ “The Voice of Serbian Zealotry” (June 6) made some misleading statements. I am not defending Milosevic, but the Serbian people.

Croatian ustashas in World War II annihilated about 1 million Serbs and Jews, and this is the reason the Serbs are not the major ethnic group in Bosnia-Herzegovina today. Prior to World War II, the Serbs and Albanians were equally divided in the Kosovo region, but because of Nazi-fascist and Albanian terror during the war, the Serbs were forced to leave their homes and were not allowed to return. Persecution by the Albanians has continued since the war.

The Serbs were our allies in World War I and World War II. They are peace-loving and democratic people. Let the Croats, Albanians, Hungarians and Muslims treat the Serbs in their midst the same way as they are treated in Serbia and in the areas with large Serbian population. This is the way to peace and understanding.
