Altadena : Council Defends Shrubs
The Town Council has recommended that the county exempt from citations front-yard shrubs and fences that were in place as of June 13, as long as they do not present a safety hazard.
The council voted 12 to 1, with one abstention, in favor of recommending a grandfather measure after an investigation into citations given to homeowners for excessively high shrubs or fences in their front yards.
A longstanding law limits shrubs, walls and fences to 3 1/2 feet. But the law had been ignored with the county’s tacit agreement until an Altadena resident complained about six months ago.
The county withheld action on 12 outstanding citations pending the council’s recommendations.
The council will also urge the county to simplify future compliance notices.
