The Encino-based company is the parent of California United Bank, which was founded in 1982 as Lincoln National Bank. Lincoln National changed its name in 1990 to avoid confusion with the scandal-plagued Lincoln Savings & Loan. CU Bancorp focuses on the so-called “middle-market,”in which it lends mostly to small-and medium-sized businesses. The company enjoyed rapid growth in the 1980s, but that growth has slowed during the past two years and CU suffered a $3.6 -million loss in 1991. In June, CU’s board replaced its longtime president John J. Keating with Stephen G. Carpenter.
