Times Mirror Cable Deal Advances: Times Mirror Cable Television Inc. said Monday it has completed its acquisition of a 20% interest in Community Cablevision from the Irvine Co. Within a year, Times Mirror plans to buy the rest of the system from the real estate developer for an undisclosed sum. The transaction, announced earlier this month, will give Times Mirror an additional 42,000 subscribers in a system that covers Irvine and parts of Newport Beach, Tustin, Orange and unincorporated Orange County. Times Mirror already owns cable systems in almost all of South County, where it has nearly 135,000 customers. The Irvine Co. decided to sell after estimates showed it would cost $12 million to convert Community Cablevision to fiber optics. The state-of-the-art technology, the trend in cable systems nationwide, would increase channel capacity and picture quality.
