The Supreme Court on Monday let stand a ruling that the Latin cross and other religious symbols on a city seal violate the constitutional requirement on the separation between church and state.

The case involved Rolling Meadows and Zion, both suburbs of Chicago which were barred by a federal appeals court from using the seals because they endorse a religious message.

The Zion city seal, adopted in 1902, contains a shield with pictures of a Latin cross, a dove carrying a branch and a scepter inside a crown. The Rolling Meadow seal includes a picture of a cross in front of a building.
