BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : All-Star Game Coaches Selected
Managers Roger Craig of San Francisco and Joe Torre of St. Louis have been added to the National League All-Star team’s coaching staff, led by Bobby Cox of the league champion Atlanta Braves. Tom Kelly of the Minnesota Twins chose Hal McRae of Kansas City and Buck Showalter of New York to join his staff for the game July 14 at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. Also named to Cox’s staff were Braves coaches Clarence Jones, Leo Mazzone and Jimy Williams. From his own staff, Kelly also named Rick Stelmaszek, Dick Such and Wayne Terwilliger. . . . Chuck Armstrong, former president of the Seattle Mariners, will return to the team as president and chief operating officer. . . . George Steinbrenner, the New York Yankees’ majority general partner, met with Commissioner Fay Vincent for 1 1/2 hours in regard to Steinbrenner’s possible return to control of the team. . . . The grievance hearing of Steve Howe, suspended from baseball on June 8 for the seventh time for a drug- or alcohol-related problem, continued.
