Three More TV Games Set During Tournament

Despite what appears to be considerable interest, only three of the U.S. Olympic team’s remaining games in the Tournament of the Americas will be televised.

Wednesday’s night’s game against Argentina will be on TNT at 7 o’clock. TNT also will broadcast the United States’ semifinal game Friday night at 7. The championship game, Sunday at 1 p.m., will be televised by NBC.

The Times received more than 100 calls Monday from readers complaining that Monday night’s game against Canada was not being televised.

The U.S. will play Panama tonight, and play a quarterfinal game Thursday night.

NBC’s coverage of Sunday’s 136-57 U.S. victory over Cuba drew a 9.3 rating and 25 share in the 25 major metered markets, according to figures released Monday by the A.C. Nielsen Co.

A rating is the percentage of all sets tuned to a program, and a share is the percentage of sets in use watching a specific program.

The weekend’s next-highest-rated event was the U.S. Olympic boxoffs, which followed Sunday’s basketball game and had a 6.9 rating and 18 share. Final national ratings are scheduled to be announced Thursday.

KNBC, Channel 4, which delayed the basketball telecast an hour because of its earthquake coverage, got an 11.3 rating and 26 share. Each local rating point is equal to 48,751 households, meaning about 550,000 households were watching basketball, almost six times as many as watched the Angels’ 9-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners on KTLA, Channel 5, which had a 1.9 rating (about 92,000 households) and a 4 share opposite the basketball game.
