Todd’s ‘Don Quixote’
I truly enjoyed Kiku Iwata’s article, “A ‘Don Quixote’ Crusade” (June 30), with much on Orson Welles. However, I seem to recall that, after the success of Mike Todd’s “Around the World in 80 Days,” his next project was to have been “Don Quixote” and that he was on his way to New York to solidify the deal when he was killed in that March, 1958, plane crash. Furthermore, I think it’s a fascinating irony that Welles failed with his attempt to stage “Around the World in 80 Days” several years prior to Todd’s greatest hit!

Editor’s Note: Todd was considering “Don Quixote” when he died. Welles produced a Broadway musical with Cole Porter music in 1946.
