Roy Tarpley, banned from the NBA after repeated violations of the league’s substance-abuse policy, was named the USBL’s player of the year. Tarpley, formerly with the Dallas Mavericks, played center for Miami and was leading the USBL with a 32.2 scoring average and a 17.0 rebounding average when he left the team to play in Greece.
