Dukes Beat Wichita to Earn Tie for Title in West Division
The Newport Dukes earned a tie for the West Division title with a 25-18 victory over Wichita in the regular-season World TeamTennis finale Sunday at Wichita.
The Dukes (9-5) tied for the title with Vail (9-5), but Vail gets the first-round bye based on a tiebreaker. The Dukes needed to win all five sets Sunday to take the title outright.
The Dukes play host to Sacramento (8-6) at 7 p.m. Tuesday at John Wayne Tennis Club. The winner of that match travels to Vail for Thursday’s divisional championship match.
“We’re just happy to be at the party,” Dukes’ Coach Greg Patton said. “We would (just) like to be at the head table. But we’re right next to it, and the seats aren’t glued down so we still have a chance to move up.”
In the East Division, San Antonio (9-5) and Tampa Bay (9-5) tied for second and play at San Antonio Tuesday.
The winner plays division-champion Atlanta (13-1) Thursday. The league’s championship match is Saturday.
