Citizen Participation : Democrat in Orange County
I grew up in the Northeast, come from a long line of Democrats and have only voted for Democratic candidates. When I moved to Orange County four years ago, Reagan was riding high in the polls and Bush was following on his coattails. Practically every person I met favored GOP candidates, and I responded by keeping my views to myself. When I went to the polls in November, 1988, an official looked through the Republican roster for my name in vain until her assistant finally said: “She must be a Democrat.”
How things have changed in four years! I no longer feel like a leper for being a Democrat. Being an outsider may be romantic, but it’s really no fun. Being part of the mainstream is a lot more gratifying.
