Gonzalez, Reidel Tied for Open Lead
Mike Reidel and Chula Vista’s Ernie Gonzalez overtook first-round leader John Schroeder and finished tied at 132 for the Open Professional lead Thursday after the second round of the San Diego County Open at the Rancho San Diego Golf Course.
Schroeder, who shot a 64 the first day, was tied for second at 133 with Derek Gilchrist and Hank Baron.
Defending champion Mac O’Grady failed to turn in a scorecard after the round and was disqualified.
Among the amateurs, Fallbrook’s Craig Anderson, the defending champion, shares the lead at 138 with David Schnider. They are two strokes ahead of San Diego’s Tom Kroll.
Alton Duhan leads in the Senior Professionals with a 137 and Ray Hughen leads the Senior Amateurs with a 142.
Todd Demsey, a Torrey Pines High graduate, holds a three-stroke lead over John Harris at the 90th Western Amateur Golf Tournament in Benton Harbor, Mich.
Demsey shot a second-round 66 on the par-71, 6,884-yard Point O’Woods Golf and Country Club.
TRACK AND FIELD
Christopher Stanton of San Diego won the bantam boys’ high jump title at the AAU/USA Junior Olympics National Championship in Rochester, Minn. Stanton high-jumped 4 feet, 8 inches.
Alexander’s Light’n Express team, based at Serra High School, qualified its 1,600-meter midget division boys (11-12) relay team to finals on Saturday. The relay includes Deon Chess, Dante Paez, Donald Taylor and Donta Pride. Lydell Burson (youth boys, ages 13-14) and Joshann Brown (youth girls) qualified in the finals for both the 100- and 200-meter running events.
AWARDS
Palomar College football Coach Tom Craft was named by the California Coaches Assn. and the California Community College Football Coaches Assn. as the state coach of the year.
Bob Lusky, who heads the golf program at Palomar, was named the Pacific Coast Conference coach of the year.
Palomar, with one state championship team and five among the state’s top three finishers, was named by Cal-High Sports magazine as California’s community college of the year.
The Comets’ 10-1 football team earned them a state title, and the school was state runner-up in women’s softball, and men’s and women’s tennis. Palomar took third in the state in wrestling and golf.
