PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Washington Signs 3-Year Contract

Raider cornerback Lionel Washington ended his holdout Thursday, signing a three-year contract. Financial details were not disclosed.

Washington joined the team at its Oxnard training camp for the afternoon workout.

That leaves six other players--running back Marcus Allen, receiver Tim Brown, cornerback Terry McDaniel, linebacker Winston Moss and defensive linemen Greg Townsend and Scott Davis--sitting out camp because of pay disputes.

Washington and the Raiders had already agreed on the length of the deal. According to D.S. Ping, Washington’s agent, the Raiders called Ping Thursday morning to get an agreement on the remaining details.

“We were prepared to wait through the preseason,” Ping said, “or whatever it took.”

To make room for Washington, the Raiders placed defensive back Bernard Ellison, hampered by a knee injury, on the preseason injured reserve list.

Washington and McDaniel have been working out together in Los Angeles while awaiting the results of negotiations.

“I’d work out in the morning and then come back home and watch TV,” Washington said. “It was strange. But I took time to reflect on what I wanted to do this year.”

It was especially strange because Washington never was a holdout previously in a nine-year career that began with the St. Louis Cardinals.

“This could be my last one,” the 31-year-old Washington said of his contract. “I wanted to make it the best.”

Washington started all 16 regular-season games last season, making five interceptions.
