Rapist Who Sought Castration Gets Life
Associated Press
HOUSTON — A man who had agreed to be castrated rather than face trial for rape was sentenced to life in prison for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl.
State District Judge Michael McSpadden had agreed on March 6 to Steven Allen Butler’s request to be castrated rather than stand trial for the 1991 attack. He had said Butler, 28, would be placed on 10 years probation.
McSpadden withdrew his support after protests, and the case went to another court, where jurors convicted Butler on Thursday and handed down his sentence on Friday.
