California IN BRIEF : MILL CREEK : Bush Authorizes Fire Relief Funds

With the Fountain fire fully encircled, President Bush authorized federal relief funds for Shasta County. The blaze burned more than 64,000 acres and destroyed 307 homes. As many as 7,500 people were evacuated at different times. Damage to public and private property totaled more than $54 million, Gov. Pete Wilson said, and the cost for fire suppression stands at $12.5 million. Bush also authorized relief funds for Calaveras County, where the Old Gulch fire burned about 18,000 acres and destroyed 50 homes.
