COUNTYWIDE : Club Expels Wieder for Backing Clinton

County Supervisor Harriett M. Wieder has been expelled from membership in the Huntington Harbour Republican political organization for violating club rules by endorsing Democratic candidate Bill Clinton, club officials said Monday.

The board of directors voted unanimously with one member abstaining last week to revoke Wieder’s longtime membership in the club.

“It was not our personal choice, but it was in our bylaws,” president Charlotte Christiana said.

Christiana said club officials received a letter of resignation from Wieder late last week after the board of directors’ action. She said Wieder submitted the letter before leaving for a trip out of the country.

Wieder could not be reached for comment Monday.

The organization’s bylaws prohibit members’ publicly supporting candidates from other parties, member Nina Hull said.

The Huntington Harbour Republicans are members of the nationally federated organization. The club, which has about 300 members, has been active for more than 25 years, Hull said.

Haydee Tillotson, a past president, said the matter is unfortunate. However, Tillotson said, while Wieder “certainly has the right to follow her convictions,” the organization is entitled to adhere to its bylaws.
