OUTLOOK
Smilowitz, an assistant at La Mirada since 1984, replaces Pat Ward as head coach. Smilowitz’s first order of business will be to restore a defense that allowed 125 points in five league losses last season. “It’s a fresh start for the players and coaches, and that’s the way we’re approaching this season,” Smilowitz said. “I think we’re going to be OK, but see me in November.” Ginter, one of the county’s best baseball players, will be the quarterback. “He was a starter at defensive back and played a little quarterback last year,” Smilowitz said. Ramos is the team’s strongest player. He has benched pressed 250 pounds, deadlifted 365 pounds and squatted 395 pounds. Smilowitz picked Troy and Sunny Hills as the co-favorites to win the league and didn’t discount his team’s playoff chances. “We have good talent, it’s just a matter of getting the right people in the right places,” he said.
