OUTLOOK

Stephens is the Matadors’ third coach in three seasons, and he has been working on improving the team’s attitude and self-confidence. But the program still faces an uphill struggle. Stephens, the defensive coordinator last season, takes over for Jim Wright, whose contract was not renewed. And he inherits the monumental task of making competitive a team that went without a victory in league play and returns only two starters--Gilbert and Fredericks. “We only have about 10 seniors and about 15 juniors (on the roster),” said Stephens, a former assistant coach at UNLV, Mt. San Antonio College and Citrus College. “We have a lot of kids who have never played before. . . . But they are good kids, and by no means am I discouraged. They look like they are going to be fun to be around.” Baughman, a split end and defensive back last season, takes over at quarterback and will try to spark an offense that scored only 103 points. Fredericks, Vargas and Lemmon, listed 50 pounds heavier than last year, anchor the offensive and defensive lines. Newcomer White lends speed at wide receiver. “The kids have been working hard, but it’s hard to say how we’ll do,” Stephens said.
