MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE: The 51st annual parade will begin today, with Olympic gold medal boxer Oscar De La Hoya as grand marshal. Rep. Edward R. Roybal and other officials and celebrities will participate in the East L.A. parade, which starts at 1 p.m. at 1st and Lorena streets. The procession will go east on 1st to Gage Avenue, turn north on Gage to Brooklyn Avenue, then east on Brooklyn to Mednik Avenue. After heading south on Mednik, the parade will end at the corner of 1st Street.

WORKSHOPS: The Los Angeles Public Library and the state of California’s Employment Development Department will sponsor Job Preparation and Readiness Workshops for young adults--ages 14 to 22--on 10 consecutive Saturdays, beginning Sept. 19 through Nov. 21. The sessions run from noon to 1 p.m. The first five will be at Baldwin Hills Library, 2906 South La Brea Ave., with the second five at the Jefferson branch library, 2211 W.
