PREP ROUNDUP : Unranked Mater Dei Girls Beat No. 3 St. Joseph in Volleyball
Unranked Mater Dei defeated Lakewood St. Joseph, ranked No. 3 in the Southern Section Division I preseason girls’ volleyball poll, in four games in a nonconference match Tuesday at Mater Dei.
Senior Heather Lee had 15 kills and Erica Helferich had 10 blocks for the Monarchs, who won, 15-5, 13-15, 15-6, 15-9.
In other nonleague girls’ volleyball:
Capistrano Valley 3, Irvine 0--Shelly Smith had 16 kills for host Capistrano Valley (3-0), which won, 15-6, 15-0, 15-9.
Century 3, Loara 0--Vanessa Anaya had nine kills for host Century (1-1), which won, 15-0, 15-9, 15-3.
Cypress 3, Ocean View 0--Heather Lowe had eight kills and two aces for host Cypress (1-0), which won, 15-7, 15-1, 15-13.
Dana Hills 3, Laguna Hills 1--Lori Bowers had 11 kills and Jeanne Vetter had 10 kills and five aces for host Dana Hills (2-0), which won, 15-9, 13-15, 15-3, 15-10.
Edison 3, University 0--Brooke Weaver had 11 kills and setter Natasha Zila had 27 assists for host Edison (2-0), which won, 15-2, 15-5, 15-8.
El Toro 3, Fountain Valley 0--Monica Bickert had eight kills and Analisa Saylor had 26 assists for host El Toro, which won, 15-8, 15-12, 15-7.
Liberty Christian 3, La Verne Lutheran 0--Yvonne Cook had 12 aces and Buffy Cugano had nine aces for host Liberty Christian (2-0), which won, 15-7, 15-8, 15-3.
Newport Harbor 3, Marina 0--Misty May had 15 kills for host Newport Harbor (1-0), which won, 15-6, 15-10, 17-15.
Sunny Hills 3, Valencia 2--Rachel Hochgesang had 29 kills for host Sunny Hills (1-0), which won, 15-12, 11-15, 13-15, 15-6, 15-7. Amber Dickey led Valencia with 12 kills.
Troy 3, Brea-Olinda 0--After trailing, 9-1, in the first game, Troy (2-0) defeated Brea-Olinda, 16-14, 15-10, 15-5. Junior Gina Lobito led Troy with eight kills. Setter Audra Gamst had 19 assists.
Westminster 3, Orange Lutheran 1--Chrissy Schenck had 20 kills for host Westminster, which won, 15-8, 15-11, 12-15, 15-5.
In nonleague girls’ tennis:
Irvine 10, Foothill 8--Alessandra Schinaia swept her singles sets, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, for host Irvine (2-0).
Laguna Beach 13, University 5--Ashley Smith and Tara Kuhnert swept at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 6-1, 6-3, for host Laguna Beach (2-1).
Mater Dei 13, Fountain Valley 5--Erika Asmuss won her singles sets, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, and Sarah Jarrett won hers, 6-2, 6-3, 6-1, for visiting Mater Dei (2-1).
Orange Lutheran 9, Orange 9 (Orange Lutheran wins on games, 72-61)--Sophomore Lori Wright swept at No. 1 singles for Orange Lutheran, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0.
Rosary 11, Sunny Hills 7--Joyce Cruz (6-0, 6-0, 6-0) and Mandy Gomez (6-4, 6-4, 6-0) swept in singles for Rosary (3-0). Sunny Hills is 2-2.
Santa Margarita 14, Laguna Hills 4--Sandy Needham swept at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-2, 6-4, for host Santa Margarita (3-0).
Western 14, Loara 4--Freshman Debbie Jethva swept at No. 1 singles for Western (3-0), 7-5, 6-3, 7-5. Lisa Cunningham and Brenda Gravell also swept their doubles sets, 7-6, 6-3, 6-1.
In nonleague boys’ cross-country:
La Habra 15, Whittier Christian 52, Whittier California 77--Brendan Mahon led the sweep for two-time defending Southern Section Division II-A champion La Habra, winning in 16 minutes 12 seconds. The Highlanders have been moved to Division III this year and are currently ranked ninth in the state.
